The Center for Older Adult Recovery

Growing older can be a rich and wondrous time for many adults. Watching children and grandchildren grow, reaping the rewards of a lifetime of saving and exploring the world around them are realizations of a life well lived. For others, these are years filled with anxiety, uncertainty, loss and profound loneliness. As a result, alcoholism and prescription drug abuse have reached epidemic proportion among this population segment. Sadly, members of a generation that was raised to regard substance abuse as shameful and reckless, now struggle in silence, often without family or friends to witness the warning signs of addiction. When seen, the signs are often mistaken as simply part of the aging process. It is with this in mind that Hanley Center opened the Center for Older Adult Recovery, with pioneering programs designed especially for adults 55 and over.

Help Delivered in an Atmosphere of Respect

At the Center for Older Adult Recovery, we believe that effectively treating older adults requires an intimate understanding of what makes their struggle unique. As the pioneer in age-specific treatment, our staff is specially trained to meet the unique needs of older adults, and our programs are designed around the insights we have gained during two decades of providing treatment.

Comfortable Treatment Among Peers

The 12-Step-based program features individual and group therapy sessions that explore what it means to age in today’s rapidly changing world. Issues involving family, relationships and end of life are explored. Among peers who share similar life experiences, older adults are comfortable discussing feelings they might otherwise suppress. Other issues specifically addressed by the program include:

  • Extended detoxification and the medical stabilization process
  • Slower transitions between levels of care
  • Complications due to cognitive function level
  • Speech or hearing impairment
  • Longer rest and relaxation periods
  • Grief & loss, shame, life transitions and depression

Sustaining Older Adult Recovery

While counselors and therapists help provide mental clarity, a full-time, 24/7 medical and nursing staff treats physical symptoms and a dietary staff ensures that nutritional requirements are met. In addition, our own Wellness and Spiritual Care staff teaches patients how to bring life back into balance, a key to sustained recovery. An Alumni Care Manager eases the transition to a new life of sobriety once our program is complete. Because alcoholism and addiction affect the entire family, our Family Education Program reaches out to patient and family alike, creating a non-confrontational place to heal and learn the skills required to make recovery last.
